Big Bear News

Cubs Coming!

I hope our announcement on July 7th, made everyone as excited as me and our staff. It’s the kind of news I like to share as it gives you  information of what is happening at the bear center. Although this is great news to us, we have not told Lucky, Holly and Tasha. 🙂 This is a whole other announcement. I’m sure it will not be met with the same excitement. We are making some changes to Den 1 as we move forward to receive the cubs. This is for the cubs protection and our adult bears interest in them.

As we look forward to cubs our goal is to raise $25,000. The list of items we need for the incoming cubs is long and demanding, and every dollar you contribute will directly support both our immediate needs and the long‑term costs of caring for these future ambassador bears.

Your generosity ensures we can provide the enrichment, nutrition, medical care, and habitat upgrades these cubs will rely on as they grow. Together, we can meet this goal and give them the strongest possible start and the beginning of a long and outstanding life at the North American Bear Center.

The cub naming contest will be coming soon. You can help by adding to our names list. Three or four name choices for each cub will be looked at and one name will be chosen for each cub.

The heat has been very hard on the bears, they like the forest ground as it is cooler. As they lie on the cooler black dirt it helps cool their body core. If you see Lucky in Den 2, the dens are damp and cold. The dampness is due to the rocks that the dens are made of as they hold moisture.

Tasha has been spending her time flirting and presumably wanting some courting behavior from Lucky but he will only bluff charge her.

Our Holly is beginning to shed. Her beautiful black coat has clumps of brown. As the bears shed the sun bleaches their shed fur and makes it different shades of brown. The interns are quick to gather it for souvenirs.

I want to thank you for all the enrichment foods you have sent but as  always we need your continued support so feel free to check out our Amazon wishlist. https://bear.org/support-us/amazon-wishlist-2/ The time will go fast and when I learn more about our new cubbies I will add new items needed to the list.

Also, just a reminder, the Bears Birthday Bash! July 18th. Lots of fun is planned, please feel free to join.

For all of our supporters, I’d like to share some sad news; Nancy Weber, a long time supporter of the NABC recently passed away. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

Thank-you for all you do,

Sr. Bear Keeper, Sharon Herrell
