Lily Mod Nita
Q: How long have you been volunteering at NABC?
A: I have been volunteering since October 2011.
Q: What motivated you to volunteer at NABC?
A: I was actually asked by Linda Gibson, who I met when I was in Ely in 2011 if I would become a Mod. I was delighted to be asked as having been able to meet Sue and Lynn and learned so much while there, I felt it was one way that I could help – albeit in a small way.
And then I was invited to become a Speaker. I had already been into local schools to talk about my experiences in Ely, so this would be an extension of that. And it is a way for me to help to educate people about the bears!!! (I can ‘talk bears’ all day!!!!
Q: What do you do as a volunteer?
A: I am a LilyMod, and have this year joined the Speaker’s Bureau.
Q: Is there one memorable experience you’ve had as a volunteer?
A: I guess it has to be getting to know the other Mods and people at the NABC when I have been there last year and again in 2012.
Q: What would you like volunteers to know about you?
A: I have loved all wildlife, but especially bears since a little girl (MANY years ago!!!). I feel really lucky to now be able to help in my way to educate people about them. Especially to help NABC & WRI, whose work I admire and have learned so much from about black bears!
Last year I formed a charity for endangered species – our main remit is with education, but we are also able to help anyone who asks us. I include all bears in this as many are endangered through loss of habitat – due in part to global warming – and also through being abused, like the dancing bears in Asia and other places.
Although officially supposed to be retired (!!) I am busier now than I have ever been and thoroughly enjoying it.
