Sheryl Erickson & Carrie Kruzan

Q: How long have you been volunteering at NABC?

A: About one and a half years.

Q: What do you do as a volunteer?

ABoth of us: Volunteer Team & Denwatchers
Sheryl: Reorganized and Edited the NABC/WRI Volunteer Handbook, Speakers Bureau Team
Carrie: Graphic Design and Reorganized the NABC/WRI Volunteer Handbook

Q: What motivated you to volunteer at NABC?

ABoth of us: After filling out Volunteer Applications, we were contacted about creating the Volunteer Handbook. We had teamed together to create a volunteer handbook for a large food pantry in our church, so we figured this was a good fit – using our talents help further organize all who volunteer with NABC/WRI’s research and ambassador bears.
Sheryl: I love learning about the natural world, the dencams got me fascinated with how black bears give birth and raise cubs in the winter
Carrie: I love any opportunity to work with nature, I loved watching Jewel last year on the dencam

Q: Is there one memorable experience you’ve had as a volunteer?

ASheryl: I’ve loved meeting people online who care deeply about wildlife, especially black bears. The people I’ve met are all bright, life-long learners. Of course, a short trip to Ely, MN, to visit the Bear Center last fall with my family was a treat too!
Carrie: The far away connections have been gratifying, getting to know the same kind of people from 1,000’s of miles away with the same interest in bears has been wonderful. Also, a black bear came onto our property in Northern Wisconsin this summer. Instead of being scared, I chased it down at a careful distance for a photo opportunity. I had learned through NABC/WRI not to be scared of black bears.

Q: What would you like volunteers to know about you?

ABoth of us: We work together on the same staff but it was really fun to volunteer together
Sheryl: I’m an ordained pastor and have served 25 years in ministry. I love to be inspired and inspire others. What a joy to find inspiration through these wondrous, beautiful creatures known as black bears!
Carrie: I love anything art-related – music, photography, woodworking, and scrapbooking. Since I have bought a new DSLR camera, I have a new love for nature photography. Every chance I get, I am out taking some kind of photo.
