Jim Stroner

Q: How long have you been volunteering at NABC?

A: Since February 2009

Q: What motivated you to volunteer at NABC?

A: Love of bears and photography

Q: What do you do as a volunteer?

A: I do a little of everything.   Field work with the bears (collars, changing GPS batteries, locating bears, etc.), den cameras, modifying GPS units to work on the bears, locating and hauling bear food, automating weight stations and of course photographing for updates and calendars.

Q: Is there one memorable experience you’ve had as a volunteer?

A: Any time I spend in the woods with the bears is memorable. Probably my favorite is when Sue and I spent 6 hours with June and cubs early in 2011.   The cubs spent the whole time high in a white pine and June spent most of the time sleeping.  We took off our packs, sat against trees and watched the bears.   Very peaceful!

Q: What would you like volunteers to know about you?

A: The most common question my wife asks me – “Are you going to Ely again this weekend?”
